From the Philippines to South Korea: My Journey as a Teacher, Storyteller, and Community Builder

I came to Korea with a suitcase and a dream. 20 years later, this is my story.

More than twenty years ago, I boarded a plane from the Philippines to South Korea with a suitcase full of hopes, questions, and dreams.

Like many foreigners arriving in a new country, I had no idea how much my life would change.

What I thought would be a simple overseas experience eventually became a journey that transformed not only my career, but also my understanding of people, culture, and community.

Today, South Korea is no longer just a place where I live.

It is a place I proudly call home.

The Beginning of a New Chapter

Moving to another country is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming.

Everything felt unfamiliar at first—the language, the customs, the food, and even the way people interacted with one another.

There were moments of uncertainty and homesickness, but those challenges gradually became opportunities for growth.

With every conversation, every friendship, and every new experience, I began building a life in Korea one step at a time.

Finding My Purpose Through Teaching

Teaching became the bridge that connected me to Korean society.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of teaching students from all walks of life—children, university students, professionals, and lifelong learners.

For me, teaching has never been simply about grammar rules or vocabulary lessons.

It is about creating a safe and encouraging environment where people feel confident enough to express themselves.

Some of my most rewarding moments have come from watching students who were once afraid to speak English eventually communicate with confidence and pride.

Those small victories remind me why I chose this profession.

Learning to Embrace Korean Culture

Living in South Korea for more than two decades has allowed me to witness the country's remarkable transformation.

Along the way, I learned that adapting to a new culture does not mean giving up your own identity.

Instead, it means learning to appreciate differences while finding common ground.

From traditional Korean customs and local festivals to everyday meals shared with friends and neighbors, each experience deepened my appreciation for the culture around me.

The more I learned about Korea, the more connected I felt to the people who welcomed me into their communities.

Building a Sense of Community

One of the greatest gifts of living abroad has been the opportunity to connect with people from different backgrounds.

Whether through education, volunteer work, cultural activities, or community organizations, I discovered that meaningful relationships can make any place feel like home.

This belief eventually inspired me to become more involved in supporting fellow Filipinos living in Korea.

Through community projects and information-sharing initiatives, I have met countless individuals whose stories reflect courage, sacrifice, resilience, and hope.

Their experiences continue to inspire me every day.

The Power of Storytelling

In recent years, storytelling has become one of my greatest passions.

Behind every foreign worker, student, immigrant spouse, and long-term resident is a story worth telling.

Some stories are about struggle.

Others are about success.

Many are about perseverance.

Through writing and sharing these experiences, I hope to create understanding—not only between cultures but also among people facing similar challenges.

Stories remind us that no matter where we come from, we share many of the same dreams, fears, and aspirations.

Still Learning After Twenty Years

One lesson I have learned from living abroad is that growth never truly ends.

Every student I teach, every conversation I have, and every story I hear continues to teach me something new.

South Korea has given me opportunities to grow as an educator, communicator, and community advocate.

More importantly, it has taught me the value of empathy, adaptability, and lifelong learning.

After more than two decades, I still wake up each day grateful for the journey that began with a single decision to step outside my comfort zone.

Final Thoughts

When people ask me what it has been like living in South Korea for over twenty years, I often tell them that it has been a journey of discovery.

Not just discovering a new country, but discovering new strengths within myself.

My story is only one among thousands of Filipinos who have built lives abroad.

Yet if there is one lesson I hope others can take from my experience, it is this:

Sometimes the greatest opportunities begin with the courage to take the first step into the unknown.

And often, the place that once felt foreign eventually becomes the place you call home.
